Dental Implants: Changing the Lives of our Patients
If you have missing teeth, you shouldn’t be embarrassed about your smile. We offer a wide range of options for you to correct your smile. The best option, especially if the missing tooth space has no surrounding teeth, is a dental implant. A dental implant will give you optimum functionality as well as an aesthetic solution.
Dental implants are artificial tooth replacements that were first developed half a century ago by a Swedish scientist named Per-Ingvar Branemark. Implants arose from the patient’s need to secure loose-fitting dentures. Since the advent of the implant, engineering and enhancements to the implant have enabled dentists to expand the implant’s usefulness, including the replacement of missing or lost teeth. Today, implant techniques provide a wide range of tooth replacement solutions including:
- Single Tooth Replacement
- Anterior Replacement
- Posterior Replacement
- Full Upper Replacement
- Anchoring Loose Dentures
Our doctors are members of several prestigious implant education societies, including the most prestigious Academy of Osseointegration and spend weeks out of the office each year at continuing education courses about dental implants to ensure our patients are getting state of the art implant treatment.
See if any of these scenarios fit you:
Do you have a loose-fitting denture? Implants can stabilize it. We can even replace your loose denture with a completely fixed restoration that works just like your original teeth and never has to come out!
Do you have a floppy partial denture with metal or plastic parts that show that gets in the way of chewing? Implants can replace your partial, giving you back a stable bite and esthetic smile.
Do you have missing teeth due to cavities or gum (periodontal) disease? Implants do not get cavities, never need root canals, and are the only fix expected to last the life of the patient.
Do you have failing teeth that are making you consider a denture, but you dread the idea of something removable? We can offer you a completely fixed restoration supported by implants that can replace your teeth, often we can go from failing teeth to secure implant-supported teeth IN ONE DAY!
More About Root-Form Implants
Implants are root-shaped titanium cylinders which mirror the size and shape of a patient’s natural tooth root while often being as strong or stronger than the original tooth. Titanium, which is also use in other common medical procedures such as joint replacement, is remarkable because it can join with the bone in the jaw forming a permanent bond. The implant or artificial root is placed into the jawbone under local anesthesia, then allowed to heal and integrate with the bone. Once the healing process is completed and the jawbone is attached to the implant, the patient returns to the dental office where the implant is fitted with the new tooth. This process generally takes anywhere from three to six months.
These types of implants are also used to secure a loose denture. Often the use of only two implants can transform a loose and uncomfortable denture into a securely fitting and stable denture with excellent long-term results!
Post Implant Care
Although proper oral hygiene is always recommended for maintaining good dental health, it is especially important when a patient has received a dental implant. Bacteria can attack sensitive areas in the mouth when teeth and gums are not properly cleaned, thus causing gums to swell and jaw bones to gradually recede. Recession of the jawbone will weaken implants and eventually make it necessary for the implant to be removed. Patients are advised to visit their dentists at least twice a year to ensure the health of their teeth and implants. Dental implants can last for decades when given proper care.
